Pastor Jason Sander’s sermon for Sunday 4/03/12. Second Sunday in Lent. “A disciple reads God's word” 2 Timothy 3:16 - 17 .Sydney Lutheran Parish - St Paul's Church, Sydney & Redeemer Church Narraweena. Be Sure to open text "notes" before you start and follow the references.
Duration:16 mins 44 secs

Mark 4:35-41  35 "On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peacel Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?" 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?"

Open with a simple prayer:

Dear God,

Open my heart to hear your word, may this word speak into my life today.

Amen

Read the passage twice.

What word(s) stand out to me as I read this?

"Peace, be still"

"Have you still no faith"

What is Jesus saying into my life today with these words/phrases? (this is not the place where I theologise the text)

Jesus who has power over nature brings me peace, in the places of my life where I feel chaotic, where life is a storm Jesus comes and rescues me. So often I don't trust, my faith is weak, yet Jesus still rescues me and let me follow him

Closing prayer based on your study.

Note: when you use your bible to do this underline words and writes comments.

Luke 10:38-42 38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
